Muffuletta Pizza recipe - Fab Everyday (1)

Is it just me, or is pizza night a family favorite? I cook for my family every day, and if I don’t say so myself, we eat pretty darn well. So it always cracks me up how excited they get for the basics, like pizza and Hamburger Helper (for real; when Hamburger Helper is on our menu they flip out). Since pizza is such a treat, we do have fun with pizza night. I’m sharing our latest obsession today. Inspired by one of our favorite New Orleans treats (see more about the place that invented it in my list of must-eat spots in New Orleans), we call this a Muffuletta Pizza, as it’s seasoned and topped with similar ingredients to the famous and delicious sandwich by the same name. I was inspired to put this into pizza form by a similar limited-time pizza that one of our local pizza joints, Austin’s Pizza, carried years ago. Since they stopped selling it, I had to try and recreate it for our family, and I must say, the results are fabulous! If you like olives, you’re going to LOVE it.

In a small bowl, mix olive oil, minced garlic, oregano, parsley, basil, garlic powder, thyme, and crushed red pepper flakes. This will mimic the olive oil and Italian seasoning that you find on the sandwich for your muffaletta pizza.

Top the pizza evenly with mozzarella and provolone cheeses (both of these cheeses are usually found on muffuletta sandwiches). Distribute chopped Canadian bacon and salami evenly over the cheeses.

Next, you’ll add sliced black, green, and Kalamata olives evenly over the meat and cheese. This trio of olives will give your muffuletta pizza the same taste as the olive tapenade that’s usually on the sandwich.

Bake the muffuletta pizza in the preheated oven for 8-11 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the crust reaches your desired brownness. If desired, top with sliced pepperoncini peppers. I definitely recommend this, but it really depends on your family’s spice tolerance and taste preferences.
