Helpful baking tips for higher elevations:

  • If you live 3,000 feet above sea level or more it is considered high elevation and may take longer to cook/bake.
  • Adjustments are needed for 5000+ feet and above:
  • Reduce baking powder: for each teaspoon, decrease 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon.
  • Reduce sugar: for each cup, decrease 2 tablespoons.
  • Increase liquid: for each cup, add 2 to 4 tablespoons.
  • Increase oven temperature by 25 degrees F.
  • Check if it is done a little early.
  • This takes some trial and error to get it right for you.

FAQs

Are Doughnuts better fried or baked? ›

While many prefer the light and crispy texture of a fried donut, leaving the deep fryer in the cabinet and baking your cake donuts instead makes for healthier, less oily donuts. It's also safer and easier to clean up, given that you don't have to deal with lots of hot oil.

What is lemon donut filling made of? ›

Prepare the filling: Create a double boiler by bringing a pot of water to boil and placing a heat-proof mixing bowl on top. Whisk in lemon juice, zest, sugar and eggs. Continue whisking on the double boiler until it starts to thicken slightly. Drop butter into the mixture one tablespoon at a time.

Do you use baking powder or soda for Doughnuts? ›

Like a lot of recipes baking powder helps the mix rise. Doughnuts are no exception. Baking powder helps it become nice and fluffy.

Why are my baked donuts dense? ›

Use a good-quality bread flour that has a high protein content, as this will give your dough the structure it needs to rise and become light and fluffy. Make sure to use the right amount of yeast for your dough. Too much yeast will cause the dough to rise too quickly, resulting in a denser texture.

Do baked donuts taste the same as fried? ›

No, baked donuts do not taste the same as fried donuts. The cooking method affects the texture, flavor, and appearance of the donuts.

What flour is best for making doughnuts? ›

Use real cake flour – not DIY cake flour!

DIY substitutions don't really cut it, and AP flour will not create doughnuts with that same soft texture. Also, bleached cake flour will work best. Unbleached (like King Arthur Baking) won't absorb as much moisture, and you may end up with doughnuts that crumble while frying.

Which flour is good for doughnuts? ›

All-purpose flour works well for doughnuts since it has a moderate amount of gluten–the binding protein commonly used in baking. This gluten content helps create a dough that is strong enough to trap air, which helps create the fluffy doughnut texture we all love.

Which flour is used to make doughnuts? ›

Flour: All-purpose flour is the dough's structure. You'll be tempted to add more and more flour as you mix the dough, but don't. You want a very soft, pillowy dough for soft, pillowy doughnuts.

How does Krispy Kreme make their donuts so fluffy? ›

Yeast-raised: Krispy Kreme donuts are yeast-raised, which gives them a softer and fluffier texture compared to cake donuts, which are denser.

How do you tell if baked donuts are done? ›

Check your donuts for doneness a minute or two before the recommended baking time is up. Baked donuts have a tendency to be dry, so you want to have a few moist crumbs attached to your toothpick after poking it into the center of the donut.

How do you keep donuts moist in the oven? ›

Store them properly: To keep your donuts fresh for as long as possible, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. This will help prevent them from drying out or becoming stale. Freeze them: If you want to make your donuts last even longer, you can freeze them.

Are baked donuts healthier than fried? ›

Are baked donuts healthier than fried? Yes they are, as there is only a small amount of oil used which is sprayed on the donut pan rather than being deep fried into oil. How long can you store donuts? Store donuts in the fridge for up to 4 - 5 days.

Are Krispy Kreme doughnuts baked or fried? ›

Like most doughnuts, Krispy Kremes are fried (cooked in oil). Frying cooks the dough rapidly from the outside in to give the doughnuts their distinctive crispy texture. The flipper turns the doughnuts over midway through the oil.

Does Dunkin donuts fry or bake their donuts? ›

Some Dunkin' locations bake their donuts in house, but not all. There are three ways Dunkin' locations can acquire donuts, according to TikTok user and franchise owner Amir Mohamed. In a video shared in August, Mohamed said, “You can A, bake them yourself in your own kitchen inside the restaurant.

Which is healthier baked or fried? ›

Because ovens heat air, and air has no calories, baking in an oven does not add additional calories or fat to the foods you cook. This is why baking is a smarter option when working on controlling calorie, cholesterol or fat intake, as you are left only with the calories and fat from the foods in the pan.
